In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, three friends from Philadelphia – Ernest Drummond, Howard Riley, and Michael Earley – found themselves craving a good drink as they spent time in their pandemic bubble. However, with Pennsylvania’s state-owned liquor stores closed, they faced a dilemma.

One day, while enjoying a backyard barbecue and sipping whiskey, the idea of creating their own liquor brand surfaced as a joke. The trio quickly realized the legal implications and challenges of such a venture, but the seed was planted.

Out of this lighthearted conversation emerged Diggs Boys Bourbon, a Black-owned spirits company focused on crafting high-quality bourbon and rye whiskey. Their signature high-rye bourbon, perfect for classic cocktails like Old Fashioneds and Manhattans, is set to debut in Pennsylvania liquor stores soon, with plans for a distillery and tasting room in Philadelphia by 2025.

Since releasing their first product, the high-rye bourbon, in January 2022, Diggs Boys Bourbon has expanded to availability in 12 states and online. Pennsylvania is next on the list, pending approval from the state’s liquor control board.

Earley, Drummond, and Riley are also proud to announce the launch of their rye whiskey, now available online. Despite the increase in Black-owned spirits brands in recent years, Earley notes the lack of Black-owned distilleries due to a lack of outside investment.

In their quest to establish a distillery in Philadelphia, Diggs Boys Bourbon aims to create a space for tastings, tours, and internships for aspiring industry professionals. The founders envision a welcoming environment where guests can enjoy bourbon, whiskey flights, cigars, and merchandise while soaking in the rich legacy of their craft.

As lifelong friends and fraternity brothers, these entrepreneurs bring a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose to their venture. Named in honor of Watson Diggs, the co-founder of their fraternity, Diggs Boys Bourbon is not just a spirits company – it’s a celebration of friendship, tradition, and the art of crafting premium spirits.
