Did you know that more Americans are diagnosed with skin cancer every year than all other types of cancers combined? Shocking, right? According to the Mayo Clinic, at least 1 in 5 U.S. adults will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70.
Now that summer is here and temperatures are soaring across the country, it’s more important than ever to protect your skin. So, how can you ensure your skin stays safe and healthy under the scorching sun?

The American Cancer Society recommends using sunscreen with broad spectrum protection against both UVB and UVA rays. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and are associated with inflammation, aging, and skin cancer. On the other hand, UVB rays cause cell mutations that drive cancer.
For effective protection against ultraviolet radiation, opt for a sunscreen that is broad spectrum and has a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher. This ensures that your skin is shielded from harmful UV rays.
Dr. Steven Q. Wang, a renowned dermatologist, emphasizes the importance of choosing a higher SPF for better protection. A 50 SPF sunscreen offers greater defense compared to a 30 SPF sunscreen, as it allows fewer UV rays to reach the skin.
To maximize protection, select a water-resistant sunscreen and reapply it every two hours, especially after swimming or towel drying. Remember, sunscreens are not waterproof, so regular reapplication is key to staying sun-safe.
While spray sunscreens are convenient, experts recommend using lotions for adequate coverage. If you do get sunburned, follow the American Academy of Dermatology’s guidelines to soothe your skin and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen.
Take care of your skin this summer and enjoy the sunshine responsibly!
