Welcome to the 2024 Philadelphia Eagles Training Camp Mailbag! We’re now 12 practices and one preseason game in, and it’s the Birds’ day off, so let’s dive into your questions. In this two-part series, we’ll focus on the defensive questions in Part I.

Question from @bigseb31213: Which position group has exceeded your expectations so far?

I have to say, the linebackers have really stood out. Here’s a rundown of the key players:

  • Devin White: Blazing speed and playmaking potential.
  • Zack Baun: Smart player with a knack for blitzing.
  • Nakobe Dean: Physical, and not afraid to get in the mix.
  • Jeremiah Trotter: Showing instincts beyond his rookie status.
  • Ben VanSumeren: Most improved player with impressive athleticism.

While they all have areas for improvement, the linebacker group is looking much stronger than last year. It’ll be exciting to see how they develop under coaches Bobby King and Vic Fangio.

Question from @WalkWithLyle: Will Jeremiah Trotter be a Week 8 starter?

Unless there are injuries, I believe Trotter will start in a rotational role. Mastering the linebacker position in the NFL takes time, and they’ll ease him into the starting role gradually.

Question from @BillBogardus: Any plans to acquire LBs via trade or free agency?

It seems the Eagles are confident in their current linebacker group and may not seek additional players at this time.

Question from @SlippinBenny: Impressions of Bryce Huff so far?

Huff has been quiet but made some impactful plays recently. Facing tough competition in practice has been a challenge, but he’s shown promise as a situational pass rusher.

Question from Hamiltwan: Is Mekhi Becton securing the RG job or is Tyler Steen losing it?

Neither player has stood out, making the RG position a concern for the Eagles.

Question from @ron_aden: Will the Eagles consider trading cornerbacks?

While some cornerbacks may be available for trade, the Eagles likely value their depth at the position due to the frequency of injuries.

Question from RHamberger14: Will Darius Slay see a decline this season?

Slay has had a strong camp, but age is a factor to watch. His performance throughout the season will be key.

Question from @Footba11Joe: Where will Cooper DeJean line up upon his return?

DeJean is expected to play as a slot corner initially, with potential to see action on the outside as well.

Question from @PinkNittany: Any chance Haason Reddick returns?

Chances of Reddick returning are slim, given his contract demands and the Eagles’ trade decision.

Question from @eagsfan: Thoughts on the recent scrimmage?

The Eagles had a successful scrimmage, maintaining their unbeaten record in joint practices for 2024.

Question from @bbrewerstandup: Order the Philly teams in terms of coverage preference.

Personally, the Eagles take the top spot, followed by the Sixers, Flyers, and Phillies.

Thanks for tuning into Part I of our mailbag series! Stay tuned for Part II coming soon.
