The Philadelphia Eagles have announced that wide receiver and punt returner Britain Covey will be placed on injured reserve after injuring his shoulder against the New Orleans Saints in Week 3. Covey was seen with his left arm in a sling in the locker room following the game.
Covey has been a standout punt returner for the Eagles since 2022 and was considered one of the best in the NFL last season. While he has not had many opportunities in the regular offense as a receiver, he started to carve out a role this season, with 7 catches for 34 yards in the first three games. Prior to this season, Covey only had 4 catches in his first two years in the NFL.
In Covey’s absence, Cooper DeJean stepped in as the punt returner for the team. Special teams coordinator Michael Clay praised DeJean’s performance, highlighting his skills and composure under pressure.
The Eagles’ wide receiver depth has been tested with multiple injuries:
- A.J. Brown: Missed the last two games due to a hamstring injury.
- DeVonta Smith: Suffered a concussion in the Saints game and did not return.
- Britain Covey: Placed on injured reserve.
- Johnny Wilson: Dealt with injuries but played in recent games.
With a limited number of healthy receivers on the active roster, the Eagles have brought up Parris Campbell from the practice squad in consecutive games. To replace Covey, the team signed tight end Jack Stoll from the practice squad to the 53-man roster and added John Ross to the practice squad.
On the practice squad, the Eagles have receivers:
- Parris Campbell
- John Ross
- Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint
- Danny Gray
- Kyle Philips
