Expanding Mental Health Services in West Philadelphia Schools

Two schools in West Philadelphia are set to welcome therapists to assist students dealing with mental health issues. This initiative, which has been successfully tested at Girard College over the past three years, aims to provide crucial support to students facing challenges such as anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, and behavioral issues.

Debora Carrera, the city’s chief education officer, highlighted the importance of equity in addressing mental health issues among children in Philadelphia. She emphasized the significant gap in mental health care for children nationwide, with less than 30% receiving the necessary support.

The school-based program originally launched at Girard College and will now expand to Add B. Anderson School and Hardy B. Williams Mastery Charter School. Students at Girard College have already benefited from therapy services provided by clinicians from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, resulting in improved academic and behavioral outcomes.

The program has received positive feedback from students and teachers alike. Teachers feel better equipped to recognize concerning behaviors, leading to effective referrals. About two-thirds of the students who utilized the services reported feeling better, indicating the significant impact of mental health support in schools.

State Senator Anthony Hardy Williams emphasized the importance of early intervention in addressing mental health issues, underscoring the need for proactive measures in schools. The program has garnered support from various stakeholders, including the Independence Blue Cross Foundation and the state budget, which allocated funds for mental health and security programs in schools.

As students navigate the challenges exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, school-based mental health services play a crucial role in providing necessary support. The program not only benefits students but also serves as a valuable resource for teachers grappling with their students’ mental health concerns.
