Exciting news for Philadelphia area shoppers! Four ShopRite stores are set to introduce high-tech shopping carts that offer a whole new level of convenience. These carts will be the first in Pennsylvania to feature this cutting-edge technology, allowing customers to keep track of their groceries and unlock rewards as they shop.
The New Jersey-based supermarket chain announced that the following stores will be equipped with the new Caper Carts:
• ShopRite of Morrell Plaza – 9910 Frankford Ave., Northeast Philly
• ShopRite of Brookhaven – 5075 Edgemont Ave., Brookhaven, Delaware County
• ShopRite of Bridge & Harbison – 5597 Tulip St., Northeast Philly
• ShopRite of Drexeline – 5000 State Road, Drexel Hill, Delaware County
These smart carts, created by Instacart, made their debut at a ShopRite in Hoboken, New Jersey, and have since been added to 11 stores across the Northeast. With a screen that allows shoppers to scan items, view their total spending, access coupons, and see rewards available through the ShopRite Price Plus membership, these carts are revolutionizing the grocery shopping experience.

When it’s time to check out, customers can simply take their carts to the self-checkout area, scan the barcode on their cart, and pay. The carts even come equipped with a tutorial mode for new users, ensuring a seamless shopping experience from start to finish. And when the trip is over, simply return the smart cart to the designated area.
This innovative technology offers even more features than the “Just Walk Out” shopping carts introduced by Amazon Fresh in 2020. Amazon Fresh recently decided to replace those carts with new Dash Carts, similar to the ones now available at ShopRite stores.
Instacart is expanding its Caper Carts to various U.S. grocers, aiming to make this technology widely accessible to shoppers. ShopRite, a retailer-owned cooperative with over 300 locations, has made its mark in Philadelphia with 13 stores, including those operated by businessman Jeff Brown’s company. The four stores set to unveil the new high-tech carts are not part of Brown’s stores, offering a unique shopping experience for Philadelphia area customers.
