As the Sixers put together a roster full of new faces this offseason, one burning question naturally arises for head coach Nick Nurse: who will make up the starting five lineup? While the core may feature returning players like Tyrese Maxey, Kelly Oubre Jr., and Joel Embiid, Nurse will need to utilize various combinations throughout the long NBA season to secure wins consistently.
Aside from the starting five, Nurse has identified four potential groupings that could prove successful once the season kicks off:
Surviving without Embiid
Maxey, Oubre, George, C. Martin, Andre Drummond
With an emphasis on being able to function efficiently when Embiid is off the court, this unit is designed to maintain a solid performance level even in his absence. Adding Paul George to the mix elevates the team’s offensive capabilities, while Maxey’s growth as a player allows for flexibility in handling ball-handling duties. Drummond’s rebounding skills offer stability in the backup center position.
Embiid does the heavy lifting
Kyle Lowry, Eric Gordon, Oubre, KJ Martin, Embiid
When Embiid is the focal point, surrounding him with trusted rotational pieces ensures consistent success. Oubre’s versatility and Gordon’s sharpshooting abilities complement Embiid well, while Lowry’s experience and court vision help maintain organization and optimize scoring opportunities.
Going small
Maxey, Lowry, Gordon, George, Embiid
This lineup, featuring the team’s best three-point shooters, is a potent offensive force that can excel with Embiid in the paint. The combination of shooting threats and playmaking options makes this unit difficult to defend, providing quality looks on every possession.
Switching (almost) everything
Lowry, Oubre, George, C. Martin, Embiid
For defensive stops and high-quality offense, this lineup showcases versatility and defensive prowess. With players capable of defending multiple positions, paired with Embiid’s rim protection, this unit poses a formidable challenge to opponents on both ends of the court.
As the 2024-25 season approaches, Nurse will need to strategically rotate these lineups to maximize the team’s success. Stay tuned for more updates on the Sixers as they embark on their journey.
