Access to menstrual products is about to become a lot easier in Montgomery County, with plans underway to install free tampon and pad dispensers in bathrooms across various public buildings. This initiative, announced by officials on Monday, is aimed at addressing the issue of period poverty, a common struggle for many residents who cannot afford essential menstrual products each month.

While some county facilities already provide these products, the new plan will ensure consistent and expanded access in all county-owned locations. Montgomery County Commissioner Neil Makhija emphasized the importance of making period products as accessible as toilet paper and soap, highlighting them as essential items for public health and hygiene.
In Pennsylvania, there is no state requirement for maintaining an adequate supply of period products in public bathrooms, despite their classification as paper goods and exemption from sales tax. Additionally, these products are not covered under federal welfare programs like SNAP and WIC, further hindering access for those in need.
Historically, schools in Pennsylvania have not provided period products, but recent efforts within the state budget aim to change this. State correctional facilities are also adapting, thanks to legislation signed by Governor Josh Shapiro mandating the stocking of tampons and pads. Several bills under consideration in the state legislature seek to make these products freely accessible to more residents through various programs.
The movement to expand access to menstrual products isn’t limited to Pennsylvania. States like New Jersey have introduced laws to provide free period products in schools, while Minnesota’s Governor, Tim Walz, earned the nickname “Tampon Tim” for his efforts to make these products available in schools.
