Fishtown, a vibrant Philadelphia neighborhood, is about to get even more exciting with the launch of an overnight marketplace outside the Fillmore Philadelphia. This new initiative aims to provide a space for food trucks to operate late into the night, addressing concerns that have surrounded street vendors in the area.

Starting in October, food trucks will be stationed at the Fillmore Philadelphia from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. on Thursdays through Sundays. This project comes as an alternative to the food truck scene at Girard and Frankford avenues, where previous attempts to ban vendors were met with opposition.

The overnight market concept was developed in collaboration with Raheem Manning, the nighttime economy director for the Philadelphia Department of Commerce. It’s the first of its kind and could pave the way for similar projects in other Philly neighborhoods.

The marketplace will be set up in the outdoor stage area at 25 East Allen St., just a short walk from Girard and Frankford avenues. The fenced-in property under Interstate 95, known as the Fish Tank, is part of a growing entertainment district in Fishtown.

The grand opening of the Overnight Market is scheduled for Oct. 3 at 8 p.m. Stay tuned for a list of participating food truck vendors!

‘Compromise’ creates two spots for late-night food

After a proposal to restrict food trucks in Fishtown was unsuccessful, the Fishtown District sought a compromise that would benefit both vendors and the community. The Overnight Market emerged as a solution to this ongoing debate.

This initiative not only supports the local food truck scene but also aims to enhance late-night dining options in the city. Manning’s vision includes expanding the concept to other neighborhoods and creating more opportunities for food truck operators to grow.

At the Fishtown market, vendors will have the chance to offer takeout options and collaborate with delivery platforms. The goal is to create a social hub where people can gather, eat, and enjoy the vibrant nightlife culture.

Fishtown District is collaborating with ISA Architects and Tiny WPA to design the market space outside the Fillmore. The area will feature ample seating and a rotating lineup of vendors, with a focus on supporting women- and minority-owned businesses.

Initially, vendors will not be charged to participate in the Overnight Market. This could change in the future, depending on the success of the project and the property owner’s requirements.

As Fishtown’s Overnight Market kicks off, city officials will be observing its impact to potentially introduce similar initiatives across Philadelphia. Vendors interested in participating can reach out to the Commerce Department for more information.

Looking ahead, the market in Fishtown may return for holiday events and expand its schedule in the coming year. Plans are in the works for daytime activities, live entertainment, and more, catering to residents and visitors alike.

Overall, the Overnight Market in Fishtown represents a collaborative effort to enhance the dining culture and provide a late-night dining option for city residents and visitors.
