The Philadelphia Phillies have made a difficult decision, placing their starting third baseman, Alec Bohm, on the 10-day injured list due to a left hand strain. This move was made retroactive to September 3, as announced by the team on Friday afternoon. In Bohm’s place, they have recalled Buddy Kennedy from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to fill the gap.
Bohm sustained the injury on August 29 during the first inning of a game and has been sidelined since then. The initial hope was that he would only miss a few days, but as his return kept getting delayed, the team decided it was best to give him some time to fully recover before returning to action.
Although Bohm has been out for eight days, league rules only allow for three days of backdating on the injured list. This means that he will be eligible to return on September 13, making his absence a total of 15 days if he is indeed back on that date.
Given that it is September and rosters are expanded, the Phillies were able to maintain a full bench despite Bohm’s inability to play. However, it became clear that his recovery was taking longer than expected, leading to the decision to place him on the injured list.
Bohm has had an outstanding season in 2024, earning his first All-Star appearance and slashing .290/.343/.462 with 89 RBIs and a league-leading 44 doubles. Kennedy, who was acquired from the Tigers in June, has been performing well for the IronPigs with a .295/.397/.513 line in 63 games.
While Kennedy has primarily played third base, he may not get many opportunities with Sosa and Clemens handling duties until Bohm’s return. In the meantime, the Phillies will rely on Nick Castellanos to continue his strong performance in the clean-up spot.
