Ranger Suárez will have to miss his first All-Star appearance, as Phillies president Dave Dombrowski announced just before Saturday’s game against Oakland.
Suárez, who has struggled in his last three starts, is dealing with some back tightness. While the team doctors are not overly concerned, they want to be cautious and ensure he is ready for his next start, which is expected after Tuesday’s game in Arlington.
According to The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Alex Coffey:
Dombrowski says Ranger Suárez has some back tightness, which is why he won’t pitch in ASG. Dombrowski said training staff wasn’t very concerned but they want to be cautious. As of now, they don’t anticipate an IL stint, and expect him to make his next start (likely in Minnesota).

Suárez had a phenomenal start to the season, boasting a 10-1 record with a 1.75 ERA, .191 batting average allowed, and 95 strikeouts through June 19. He was a strong candidate for his first All-Star nod and was even being considered for the NL Cy Young alongside teammate Zack Wheeler. However, his recent performance has seen a decline.
Since June 25, Suárez has faced challenges, going 0-3 with a spiked ERA of 7.06 and opposing batters hitting .319 off him in that span. Despite his struggles, he had a decent outing against the Athletics on Friday but was tagged for four runs in the Phillies’ loss.
The decision to skip the All-Star Game will give Suárez time to rest and recover. While it’s disappointing for the Phillies who had multiple players set to participate, it may be the best decision for Suárez in the long run.
Major League Baseball announced that Max Fried will replace Suárez on the NL roster, making a pitcher swap between the Braves and Phillies.
This unforeseen change showcases the unpredictable nature of the sport and adds an interesting twist to an already exciting season. While Suárez may not be at the All-Star Game, fans can still look forward to seeing other standout players take the field.
