The saga of the impeachment of Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner has finally come to a close. In a recent ruling by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, it was declared that the impeachment effort against Krasner initiated by the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 2022 had expired along with that year’s legislative session.
Krasner’s attorney, John Summers, hailed the decision as a resounding victory, stating, “The impeachment effort of DA Krasner is dead, null, void, over.” This ruling effectively puts an end to any potential Senate trial on misconduct charges against Krasner.
In a further blow to the impeachment efforts, a Commonwealth Court panel had earlier deemed the allegations in the articles of impeachment unconstitutional in January 2023. Summers emphasized that this ruling reaffirmed the importance of an independent court system in a democracy.
State Rep. Craig Williams, who led the impeachment proceedings in the House, expressed disappointment over the Supreme Court’s decision, noting that the substance of the allegations remained unresolved. He emphasized the need to uphold the rule of law and restore public confidence in the justice system.
Krasner, a proponent of progressive criminal justice policies, had been a target of criticism for his approach since taking office in 2018. The articles of impeachment, passed by a narrow 107-85 vote, accused Krasner of dereliction of duty, obstruction of the investigating committee, and various violations.
Despite the challenges he has faced, Krasner remains committed to serving the people of Philadelphia. The Supreme Court’s ruling not only vindicates him but also underscores the importance of respecting the electoral process.
As the legal battle comes to an end, Krasner can now focus on continuing his work to bring about positive change in the criminal justice system. The resilience and determination he has shown throughout this ordeal serve as a testament to his dedication to serving the community.
