Excitement quickly turned to fear during a field hockey game at the Temple University Sports Complex on Friday afternoon when gunshots rang out nearby, causing an abrupt end to the match.
The women’s teams from La Salle University and Saint Louis University were in the midst of a competitive game when reports of gunfire around 4:30 p.m. prompted the evacuation of all players and spectators. Thankfully, law enforcement swiftly cleared the area and no injuries were reported.

The incident occurred on the 1300 block of North Broad Street, specifically in a KFC parking lot. Authorities determined that the shooter had already left the scene upon their arrival. Fortunately, no victims, suspects, or weapons were found, but the Philadelphia Police are actively investigating the situation.
Players and spectators sought shelter in the locker room until authorities confirmed that the area was secure. Following the confirmation, everyone vacated the premises, and the game did not resume.
The match was being streamed online on ESPN+ and the Midtown Madness Podcast captured the moment when players hurriedly exited the field upon hearing the gunshots, showcasing a visceral reaction to the unsettling event.
In response to the incident, Temple University Vice President & Chief for Public Safety Jennifer D. Griffin reached out to the leadership at La Salle University and Saint Louis University to ensure their support and cooperation.
Griffin also extended a caring hand to any students impacted by the ordeal, encouraging them to seek assistance from Tuttleman Counseling Services for emotional support. Faculty and staff members were also urged to utilize Temple’s employee assistance program for any needed help.
