As the NFL training camp rolls on, Howie Roseman’s history of making trades in late August and early September comes to mind. With that in consideration, let’s indulge in some hypothetical trade scenarios that may never come to fruition, but are exciting to contemplate nonetheless.
Eagles OL Tyler Steen to the Colts for WR Alec Pierce
Why it makes sense for the Eagles: The Eagles are in dire need of a WR3, and Alec Pierce could be the answer to their prayers. Pierce, a second-round pick by the Colts in 2022, brings a unique blend of size and athleticism to the table.
Despite being a low-volume receiver, Pierce has managed to amass 73 catches for 1107 yards and 4 TDs in his first two seasons, showcasing an impressive 15.2 yards per catch average. His speed and playmaking ability could add a new dimension to the Eagles’ offense.
Steen, who lost the starting RG job to Mekhi Becton, could provide the Colts with an upgrade at RG over Will Fries. The Eagles have depth on their offensive line and could afford to part ways with Steen in exchange for a promising young receiver like Pierce.
Eagles CB Eli Ricks to the Texans for WR Robert Woods
Why it makes sense for the Eagles: Once again, the Eagles’ need for a reliable WR3 is glaring. Robert Woods, though on the downside of his career at 32, still possesses the skills and experience to make an impact in Philadelphia.
Woods could serve as a mentor to young receivers and provide a stop-gap solution until rookies like Johnny Wilson and Ainias Smith are ready to step up. His versatility to play both inside and outside makes him a valuable addition to the Eagles’ receiving corps.
Why it makes sense for the Texans: The Texans have a surplus of receivers and could benefit from adding a talented young corner like Ricks to their roster. Ricks, who may not make the Eagles’ final roster, could provide depth and competition in the Texans’ secondary.
Eagles fifth-round pick in 2025 to the Chargers for WR Quentin Johnston
Why it makes sense for the Eagles: With a glaring need at WR3, Quentin Johnston could be a valuable addition to the Eagles’ receiving corps. Johnston, a first-round pick by the Chargers in 2023, has the talent to excel in Philadelphia under the right coaching.
The Eagles, who have an extra fifth-round pick in the 2025 draft, could use it as a bargaining chip to acquire Johnston and bolster their receiving options.
Why it makes sense for the Chargers: Despite being a first-round pick, Johnston has not lived up to expectations in Los Angeles. With a crowded receiving corps and the emergence of other young talents, the Chargers may be willing to part ways with Johnston for the right offer.
