Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s recent visit to a Scranton ammunition plant has sparked controversy and raised eyebrows across party lines. The trip, which took place on Sunday, has led to accusations of misuse of government resources and prompted calls for the Ukrainian ambassador to the U.S. to be fired. House Republicans have launched an investigation into the matter, but the White House and the Pentagon are now weighing in.

The visit to the Scranton Army Ammunition Plant was requested by Ukraine and not the Harris campaign or White House. The plant manufactures equipment critical to Ukraine’s defensive war against Russia. The event was attended by Governor Josh Shapiro, U.S. Senator Bob Casey, and U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright, but notably no elected Republicans were present.
House Speaker Johnson criticized the visit as a partisan campaign event designed to benefit Democrats and influence elections. However, the Pentagon confirmed that the visit was official business related to U.S. security assistance to Ukraine. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre called on House Republicans to drop the issue, labeling it as a political stunt.
President Zelenskyy has previously met with a bipartisan group of governors in Utah and has been actively seeking support from U.S. officials. The strong bipartisan support for Ukraine’s defensive war against Russia has become a key issue in the U.S. presidential campaign.
While Vice President Harris advocates for continued military aid to Ukraine, former President Donald Trump has criticized such support and praised Russian President Vladimir Putin. The contrasting views on U.S. assistance to Ukraine highlight the stakes involved.
Despite the controversy surrounding Zelenskyy’s visit, many Americans believe in providing support for Ukraine. Polling data indicates widespread support for aiding Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, with Pennsylvania having one of the highest percentages of Ukrainian Americans in the country.
