Exciting news for Philadelphia Phillies fans! Ahead of their highly anticipated matchup with the Oakland Athletics on Friday evening, the team made a big announcement – utility player Whit Merrifield has been released.
A former three-time All-Star, Merrifield, now in his age-35 season, struggled to find his groove during his time with the Phillies. Despite playing in 53 games across both the outfield and the infield, Merrifield’s batting average was just .199 with a disappointing .527 OPS.
Back in February, the Phillies had high hopes for Merrifield when they signed him to a one-year, $8 million deal to serve as a valuable backup. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned, leading to his release from the team.
Replacing Merrifield on the roster is 29-year-old Weston Wilson, another versatile utility player who has been called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
