Spark flew on a SEPTA train Thursday afternoon when a disagreement took a dangerous turn, resulting in a woman stabbing a man in a shocking turn of events.

The incident occurred on a westbound train near the Spring Garden Market-Frankford Line station just before 12:30 p.m., as reported by SEPTA. Things escalated when a female passenger repeatedly admonished a male passenger for smoking onboard.

UPDATE: Mark Dial, a former police officer accused of killing Eddie Irizarry, has been released on bail after a first-degree murder charge was dismissed.

The confrontation turned physical when the man struck the woman in the face. In a retaliatory move, the woman resorted to stabbing the man in the arm and stomach, according to officials.

Subsequently, the train operator alerted the authorities, who promptly responded at Spring Garden to intervene. The woman justified her actions as being in self-defense.

The injured man was rushed to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital with injuries that were deemed non-life-threatening. The woman is said to be cooperating with the ongoing investigation, with no arrests or charges made at this time. Both parties involved have yet to be identified.

SEPTA has been cracking down on quality-of-life offenses, including smoking, since July. It remains unclear if either of the individuals received citations for their roles in the altercation.
