Gillian’s Wonderland Pier, a beloved amusement park on the Ocean City Boardwalk, is preparing to close its doors after nearly a century of operation. The park, famous for its iconic Ferris wheel that can be seen from all over the barrier island, has been a staple in the community for generations. However, due to financial difficulties, Jay Gillian, the park’s owner and mayor of Ocean City, announced that it was no longer sustainable to keep the park open.

In a heartfelt message shared on Facebook, Gillian expressed his sadness at letting go of the 94-year-old tradition that has been a part of his family for generations. He acknowledged the cherished memories created at Gillian’s amusements and thanked the community for their support over the years.

As part of the closure, 6th Street Pizza and Grill, located within the Wonderland complex, will also be closing its doors. While exact dates for the closures have not been announced, Gillian expressed his efforts to sustain the park through numerous challenges in recent years.

In 2021, Gillian’s Wonderland Pier entered a partnership with developer Icona Resorts in an effort to address its financial struggles. Prior to this partnership, the park faced foreclosure due to defaulted mortgage loans. Gillian noted that his family no longer owns the real estate and remains uncertain about the property’s future.

Founded in 1930 by David Gillian, the park has been a family affair with generations of Gillians involved in its operations. From humble beginnings as the Fun Deck with just a few rides, the park grew to include over 25 attractions, including the towering Giant Wheel.

After 47 years of working at the park, Gillian expressed his plans to retire from the amusement park business. He reflected on the valuable lessons learned from his family and the opportunity to work alongside them in a cherished family business.

While the closure of Gillian’s Wonderland Pier marks the end of an era, the memories created at the park will forever hold a special place in the hearts of those who experienced its magic. As the sun sets on this iconic amusement park, the legacy of Gillian’s Wonderland Pier will be remembered for generations to come.
