The Philadelphia Phillies shook things up at the trade deadline, adding relievers Carlos Estévez and Tanner Banks, outfielder Austin Hays, and minor-league pitchers Seth Johnson and Moisés Chace to their roster.
Rumors swirled that the Phillies had also made an offer for White Sox pitcher Garrett Crochet, but Chicago decided to keep their left-handed All-Star for the remainder of the season, as reported by The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.
Rosenthal revealed that both the Phillies and the Dodgers had made compelling offers for Crochet, with the Phillies opting not to include righty Andrew Painter in their proposal due to his recovery from Tommy John surgery.
Painter, despite his injury setback, remains a key prospect in the Phillies’ system, ranking highly among positional players like Aidan Miller and Justin Crawford.
While the Phillies were willing to part with some promising pitching talent, the organization values Painter’s potential as a future ace, reflecting the importance they place on nurturing talent from within.
Prior to the trade deadline, the Phillies seemed content with their starting rotation featuring Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola, Ranger Suárez, and Cristopher Sánchez. However, recent struggles have highlighted the need for additional reinforcements like Crochet.
Looking ahead, the Phillies still have time to bounce back in the second half of the season and solidify their position in the standings.
