Sixers mailbag: The overlooked part of the offseason?

Welcome to our weekly mailbag where we discuss all things Sixers as we gear up for the upcoming training camp starting on Oct. 1. We have received some great questions from our fans, so let’s dive right in!

From @Josh_Rice438: What do you think is the most sneaky important or slept on move made this offseason?

There are two moves that stand out, one positive and one negative. The departure of Nic Batum may have a larger impact on the Sixers than many realize. Despite his modest stats last season, Batum brought crucial defense, passing, and shooting that would complement the current roster, especially alongside his former teammate Paul George. However, from a salary cap perspective, retaining Batum would have meant sacrificing other roster additions like Caleb Martin. On a positive note, the Sixers managed to strengthen their roster without sacrificing future draft picks, giving them flexibility for the future.

From @alexdickinsons: Any chance Ricky Council IV or Guerschon Yabusele end up starting and pushing Kelly Oubre Jr. to the sixth man role?

While Oubre could potentially transition to a bench role to accommodate other starters, Council IV and Yabusele are unlikely to secure consistent starting positions. Both players have skills to contribute but may not be ready for a starting role this season. Caleb Martin’s versatility at the four should not be underestimated, as he can effectively guard up and provide valuable minutes in that position.

From @spelledwithaZ: If the Sixers were using the 15th spot on the roster, who’s the ideal minimum guy to sign?

Adding a center capable of playing spot minutes would be advantageous for the Sixers, considering Joel Embiid’s potential resting periods during the season. With limited options in the market, veterans like Bismack Biyombo and Damian Jones could provide a valuable backup behind Embiid. The Sixers may opt to keep the roster spot open initially, given the lack of enticing options available.
