After a turbulent 2019-20 season, the Sixers underwent massive changes to steer the franchise in a new direction. Former head coach Brett Brown was replaced by Doc Rivers, and Daryl Morey joined as the lead executive, shifting Elton Brand to a supporting role. This marked the beginning of an eventful offseason that would reshape the Sixers’ future.

The NBA Draft

As the 2020 NBA Draft unfolded, Morey wasted no time making moves to revamp the team. The highlight was shedding Al Horford’s cumbersome contract in exchange for Danny Green, a move that instantly enhanced the team’s roster. Next, the Sixers acquired sharpshooter Seth Curry from the Mavericks, further boosting their floor-spacing and offensive capabilities.

The draft continued to yield results as the Sixers selected Isaiah Joe and Paul Reed, both of whom contributed positively to the team in subsequent seasons. Perhaps the most pivotal moment came when the Sixers snagged Tyrese Maxey, a rising star who rapidly evolved into one of the league’s top point guards.

Free Agency

In free agency, the Sixers added Dwight Howard to bolster their frontcourt depth. Although Howard’s impact waned in the playoffs, he provided valuable minutes during the regular season. Several players departed the team, paving the way for new faces to make their mark.

Results

The 2020-21 season saw the Sixers clinch the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference, fueled by Joel Embiid’s emergence as a superstar and Tobias Harris’s stellar performances. Despite a heartbreaking playoff exit, the team showcased significant progress under Rivers’ guidance.

Morey’s efforts had steered the Sixers in the right direction, setting the stage for a brighter future. However, there was still work to be done to solidify their status as championship contenders…
