The drama surrounding Ben Simmons has finally subsided, allowing the Sixers to focus on building a championship-caliber team around Joel Embiid and new addition James Harden. With tough competition from teams like the Celtics, Bucks, and Heat, it was a challenge for Daryl Morey to elevate the Sixers to contender status.

In this chapter of our Sixers offseason rewind series, let’s revisit an exciting time when the team was on the brink of achieving greatness:

NBA Draft

The Sixers made a bold move during the 2022 NBA Draft by trading their first-round pick and Danny Green to acquire promising shooting guard De’Anthony Melton from the Memphis Grizzlies. This trade turned out to be a steal for the Sixers as Melton proved to be a valuable asset during his time with the team.

Melton’s strong performance on both ends of the court, despite battling injuries, made him a key contributor to the team’s success. His combination of scoring, rebounding, and defense made him a fan favorite in Philadelphia.

Free Agency

James Harden’s selfless decision to take a significant pay cut to help the team build a championship roster set the tone for a successful free agency period. The addition of players like P.J. Tucker and Danuel House Jr. provided valuable depth and experience to the team.

Despite some challenges, Harden’s leadership and scoring prowess guided the team to an impressive regular season record and a thrilling playoff run.

Results

The Sixers’ journey in the playoffs showcased their resilience and potential. Harden’s heroics, Embiid’s dominance, and Maxey’s emergence as a rising star propelled the team to key victories. However, a heartbreaking defeat in Game 7 against the Celtics left the team with more questions than answers.

As they regrouped for the offseason, the future looked uncertain but full of possibilities. Morey faced tough decisions regarding player contracts, coaching staff, and team strategy moving forward.
