Welcome to the second edition of our Sixers Ties series, where we explore the connections and storylines between the Philadelphia 76ers and each of the other 29 teams in the NBA. Today, we’re diving into the Central Division, a division that promises to be fiercely competitive in the upcoming 2024-25 season.

Sixers Ties: Atlantic Division

Milwaukee Bucks

In a conference dominated by the Boston Celtics, the Sixers and New York Knicks are often seen as the primary challengers. However, let’s not overlook the Milwaukee Bucks. Despite a disappointing season in 2023-24, the Bucks possess a roster led by Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard, supported by talents like Khris Middleton and Brook Lopez.

The midseason coaching change that brought Doc Rivers to Milwaukee adds an interesting twist to the Bucks’ narrative. Can Rivers and his staff elevate the team’s depth to compete at the highest levels?

It’s worth noting that the Sixers hold the Bucks’ 2027 second-round pick, a reminder of the Patrick Beverley-for-Cam Payne trade that benefited both teams.

Detroit Pistons

Tobias Harris recently returned to the Detroit Pistons after a stint with the Sixers characterized by mixed performances. His presence, alongside Paul Reed, who the Pistons claimed off waivers from the Sixers, aims to boost Detroit’s competitiveness in the upcoming season.

While Reed may not have had a fairy-tale ending in Philadelphia, his potential as a backup center makes him a valuable asset for the Pistons.

Indiana Pacers

T.J. McConnell’s journey from the Sixers to the Pacers highlights his growth as one of the NBA’s top backup point guards. McConnell’s recent contract extension with the Pacers reinforces his contributions to the team’s success.

Another player with ties to the Sixers, Dakota Mathias, adds depth to the Pacers’ roster in a training camp deal.

Chicago Bulls

Nikola Vučević, once a Sixer, now brings his skills to the Chicago Bulls. Vučević’s journey underscores the flux of NBA careers and team dynamics. Additionally, the Bulls’ front office, led by former Sixers executive Marc Eversley, faces scrutiny following notable offseason moves.

Cleveland Cavaliers

Former Sixer Georges Niang joined the Cavaliers in pursuit of greater opportunities. His shooting prowess is crucial for Cleveland’s offensive strategy under new head coach Kenny Atkinson. Meanwhile, Ty Jerome’s journey, albeit brief, ties back to the Sixers through the 2019 NBA Draft.
