City Council has officially approved a groundbreaking initiative that aims to make voting more accessible for nursing home residents who may struggle to make it to the polls. Spearheaded by Councilmember Nina Ahmad and City Commissioners Chairman Omar Sabir, the Platinum Voters initiative is set to revolutionize the voting process for seniors.

This initiative will assist seniors in the entire process of mail-in voting, from application to ballot collection. Councilmember Ahmad’s office will compile a list of state-licensed facilities and designate liaisons to work with council members, while the City Commissioners Office will oversee the distribution of mail-in ballot applications to nursing homes. Once the seniors receive their ballots, specific dates for secure collection will be set, with receipts provided for voters’ records.
“These residents are often overlooked and face barriers to participate in elections,” said Ahmad. “Voting by mail makes participating in this democratic process much more accessible for them.”
According to a report from the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging, seniors face various obstacles when it comes to voting, including travel restrictions, accessibility issues at polling places, and a lack of updated government IDs, which are necessary for new Pennsylvania precinct voters.
City Commissioners Chairman Sabir emphasized the importance of this initiative in the upcoming election, stating, “This election is the most critical election in the history of our country, and we need everyone to come out … to increase the turnout for Philadelphia.”
This initiative is just one part of a larger effort by the Office of the City Commissioners to enhance voter access in preparation for the 2024 presidential election. Recently, the second satellite election office opened in Germantown at 5301 Chew Ave, following the first office in West Philadelphia that opened earlier this year. The third office is set to open at 5601 Lancaster Ave on September 17.
