Recent events at Citizens Bank Park have ignited tensions between the Rays and Phillies, resulting in suspensions and fines handed down by Major League Baseball. Rays reliever Edwin Uceta received a three-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for throwing at Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos, sparking a bench-clearing incident.
Additionally, Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash was fined and suspended for a game, according to an announcement by MLB via Rays beat writer Adam Berry. The incident occurred during the second game of a series between the two teams, with the Phillies ultimately taking the lead late in the game.
Following a series of runs scored by the Phillies, tension escalated leading to Uceta hitting Castellanos with a pitch, resulting in ejections and a clear sense of displeasure from both sides. Castellanos, speaking after the game, expressed his frustration at the intentional hit-by-pitch.
Despite the suspension, Uceta had been enjoying a successful season as a reliever, although his numbers suffered in the game against the Phillies. The Phils, on the other hand, look to capitalize on their momentum and secure a sweep of Tampa Bay in their next matchup.
Schwarber’s Absence
The Phillies will be without the services of Kyle Schwarber, their record-setting leadoff man, in the upcoming game against Tampa Bay. Schwarber, who recently set a major league record for leadoff home runs in a single season, is being given additional rest to recover from an elbow issue.
Bryson Stott will leadoff in Schwarber’s absence, with the team opting for caution ahead of a crucial series against the Mets. Despite initial optimism about Schwarber’s availability, the decision was made to prioritize his recovery and ensure he is fully fit for future games.
