It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of baseball legend, Pete Rose, at the age of 83. Rose, known as Major League Baseball’s all-time leader in hits, at-bats, and games played, left an indelible mark on the sport.
One of Rose’s crowning achievements was being a vital part of the Phillies’ 1980 World Series team, which secured the franchise’s first-ever championship. Throughout his career, Rose was a 17-time All-Star and won additional World Series titles with the Cincinnati Reds in 1975 and 1976.
However, Rose’s legacy off the field was marked by controversy. In 1989, he was banned from baseball for admitting to betting on the sport, a decision that prevented him from being inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame despite his remarkable on-field achievements.
In more recent years, Rose’s reputation faced scrutiny due to allegations of statutory rape dating back to the 1970s, ultimately leading to the cancellation of his planned induction into the Phillies’ Wall of Fame in 2017.
In light of Rose’s passing, the Phillies released a statement expressing their condolences, while Major League Baseball extended their deepest sympathies to Rose’s family, friends, and fans across various cities who admired his talents and determination on the field.
