Vivian Kneller’s journey began as an infant when her parents were advised by a pediatrician to seek specialized eye treatment in Nashville due to concerns about her eyes. This decision ultimately led them to Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia where Vivian was diagnosed with bilateral retinoblastoma, a rare form of childhood cancer.

The shocking news didn’t end there. Vivian’s brother, Thomas, was also diagnosed with the same condition, leaving their parents, Tim and Alexis Kneller, reeling from the devastating blow of having both their children battle the disease.

Tim Kneller described the moment of confirmation as being hit with repeated blows, leaving them in a state of despair. With two children needing treatment in a city far from home, the Knellers had to make the difficult decision to temporarily relocate to Philadelphia to ensure the best care for their kids.

The treatment of retinoblastoma has come a long way in recent years, with advancements in chemotherapy techniques leading to more successful outcomes. Dr. Carol Shields, from Wills Eye Hospital, highlighted the progress made in managing the disease and the shift towards preserving eyesight.

Both Vivian and Thomas underwent chemotherapy treatments at Wills Eye Hospital, with Thomas successfully responding to six cycles of systemic chemotherapy that improved his vision and reduced tumors in both eyes.

The Knellers, despite facing immense challenges, found solace in the resilience of their children and the support they received during this trying time. Now, with the children responding well to treatment, the family is preparing to return home to Knoxville.

Although the journey has been arduous, Tim and Alexis remain steadfast in their commitment to their children’s well-being. Tim plans to resume his chimney sweep business, while Alexis will focus on caring for Thomas and Vivian.

The Knellers’ story serves as a testament to the unwavering love and determination of parents in the face of adversity, showcasing the strength and resilience of families confronted with life’s most challenging circumstances.
