Are missed tackles costing the Philadelphia Eagles games? In their recent loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Eagles struggled with tackling, allowing short gains to turn into big plays. This issue has been consistent, with 16 missed tackles according to NFL Next Gen Stats, 15 according to the team, and 13 according to an independent analysis.
Looking closer, Nakobe Dean and Reed Blankenship stood out with four and three missed tackles, respectively. This isn’t a new problem for the Eagles, as they struggled with missed tackles in their Week 1 game against the Packers as well. However, they showed improvement in Week 3 against the Saints.
Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio acknowledged the problem, pointing out that the team often leaves their feet too early and fails to wrap up effectively. While the Eagles don’t practice live tackling, they plan to address this during their bye week. Coach Nick Sirianni emphasized the importance of drills and film study to improve tackling fundamentals.
With the extra time during the bye week, the Eagles are set to reevaluate their tackling techniques and simulate game situations in practice. Sirianni stressed the importance of attention to detail and fundamentals, recognizing the impact of missed tackles on the team’s performance.
