A shocking crime that rocked a Bucks County community three years ago has finally come to a close as Michael Thomas Stark, a Montgomery County man, was sentenced to life in prison this week for the kidnapping, robbery, and murder of his coworker, Matthew Branning. This tragic tale began when Branning disappeared after leaving work in October 2021, sparking a two-month search that ended with the discovery of his remains in a swampy area in Maryland.

Stark, 50, was found guilty of first-degree murder and other charges after a trial that revealed the harrowing details of Branning’s last moments. Both men worked at a company in Bucks County that specialized in water treatment systems, but their professional relationship took a dark turn when Stark ambushed Branning and forced him to withdraw money from his bank account.

Police were able to trace Branning’s movements through surveillance footage, cell phone data, and toll booth records, eventually leading them to Stark’s involvement in the crime. The heartbreaking discovery of Branning’s remains in Maryland shed light on the horror he endured at the hands of his coworker.

Despite having worked together for nine years, Stark and Branning had no personal connection outside of the office. Stark’s sudden absence from work on the day of the incident raised suspicions, and his own family reported him missing, ultimately connecting him to Branning’s disappearance.

Months later, with mounting evidence against him, Stark was apprehended in Michigan and brought back to Pennsylvania to face justice. In a trial that exposed his heinous crimes, Stark was convicted of first-degree murder, robbery, kidnapping, theft, and other charges, painting him as a dangerous individual with little regard for others.

The sentencing handed down by Bucks County Common Pleas Judge Stephen A. Corr reflected the severity of Stark’s actions—a life sentence without parole for murder, plus additional years for robbery and kidnapping. Furthermore, Stark was ordered to pay restitution to the victims’ compensation program, underscoring the devastation he brought upon Branning’s loved ones.
