Welcome to our Sixers player preview series! As we count down to Sixers Media Day on September 30, we will be taking a closer look at each of the 14 players on the team’s roster. In this series, we will pose two critical questions for each player that will determine their fate in the upcoming season before making a prediction about what lies ahead for them in 2024-25.
Today, we turn our attention to one of the most high-profile players to switch teams in the NBA this offseason: nine-time All-Star, Paul George. After a five-year stint with the Los Angeles Clippers, George has signed a four-year max deal with the Sixers, hoping to finally make his mark in the NBA Finals.
Sixers player previews:
Jared McCain | Adem Bona | Reggie Jackson | Guerschon Yabusele | KJ Martin | Ricky Council IV | Eric Gordon | Kyle Lowry | Andre Drummond | Caleb Martin | Kelly Oubre Jr.
Will George defend go-to scorers in the regular season?
Throughout his career, George has been known for his two-way prowess, excelling as both a scorer and a premier defensive player on the wing. While his athleticism may have slightly declined at 34, George still possesses the skills to be a top-tier defender when needed. However, with a strong defensive lineup already in place for the Sixers, George may have the opportunity to conserve energy for the offensive end.
With players like Caleb Martin and Kelly Oubre Jr. capable of handling tough defensive assignments, George could focus more on scoring, especially with the presence of Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey as primary options. While he will still be called upon during the playoffs to defend star players, the regular season may see George take a more relaxed approach on defense.
Can George play at power forward?
As the Sixers look to fill the power forward position, George’s versatility could be a valuable asset. Standing at 6-foot-8 and 220 pounds, George has the size to play at the four, providing the team with additional options on the court. By giving George minutes at power forward, the Sixers could enhance their bench strength and improve their floor spacing.
Prediction
Despite concerns about his injury history and playoff performance, George is expected to shine for the Sixers in the upcoming season. With reduced defensive responsibilities and occasional minutes at power forward, George will focus on delivering a strong offensive output for the team. His scoring ability and overall contribution make him a key player for the Sixers as they aim for success in 2024-25.
