The Philadelphia Flyers have made a bold move by placing forward Ryan Johansen on unconditional waivers with the intention of terminating his contract, citing a “material breach.” This decision comes after Johansen was acquired in a trade with the Colorado Avalanche during the trade deadline but never saw any ice-time with the Flyers or their AHL affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.
In a statement, the organization mentioned a medical issue that was hindering Johansen from playing, hinting at a possible departure. General manager Danny Briere expressed uncertainty about Johansen’s future with the team during his exit interview at the end of the season.
Despite the decision to terminate his contract, there may still be lingering issues surrounding Johansen’s injury and the circumstances that led to his lack of game time with the Flyers. Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman suggests that the situation is not entirely resolved.
In response to the Flyers’ announcement, Johansen’s agent, Kurt Overhardt, released a statement addressing the decision. Overhardt is no stranger to dealing with player transactions within the Flyers organization, as he also represents Cutter Gauthier, a former top prospect who was traded earlier in the year.
