As training camp kicks off, the Philadelphia Eagles have plenty to feel optimistic about. From Saquon Barkley’s impactful signing to the emergence of top cornerback Quinyon Mitchell, the team is looking strong. With the guidance of new coaches Kellen Moore and Vic Fangio, as well as Jalen Hurts’ improved health, there is a sense of promise in the air.
However, the memory of the previous season’s second-half collapse still lingers. This has placed immense pressure on the team to bounce back and reclaim their status as Super Bowl contenders.
Heading into the upcoming season, the Eagles find themselves in a pivotal position. Let’s take a look at some of the recent discussions surrounding the team:
Under the Spotlight
Tim McManus | ESPN
Following last year’s challenges, head coach Nick Sirianni is feeling the heat. Despite leading the team to three consecutive playoff appearances, the spotlight is on him to deliver this season. With new additions to his coaching staff, including Moore and Fangio, Sirianni must produce results to secure his position.
In an ESPN roundtable, Tim McManus wrote:
“Sirianni has a 34-17 regular-season record and has taken Philadelphia to the playoffs each of the past three seasons. But he was at the helm for last year’s 1-6 collapse that resulted in both his offensive and defensive coordinators being fired, effectively taking the safety netting out from under him. Sirianni was unable to get on the same page with quarterback Jalen Hurts last season and has since handed off many of the offensive responsibilities to Kellen Moore. Given the talent on this roster and the soaring expectations in the city, it will take a deep playoff run to steady the ground under Sirianni.”
Risks Ahead?
Bill Barnwell | ESPN
Despite efforts to address previous shortcomings, there are concerns regarding the Eagles’ potential decline. Bill Barnwell of ESPN highlighted the team as one of five at risk of regression in the upcoming season. While improvements have been made, challenges remain, particularly on the defensive side of the ball.
“Some of these moves will work. (I think Huff will be a star, and one of the two rookie corners should be a starting-caliber player quickly.) Counting on them all to work is probably naive. And the core element of what the Eagles have had at their best — a deep, dominant defensive line — might be neglected here.”
Rising Stars
Kevin Patra | NFL.com
Amidst the uncertainties, there is optimism as well. According to Kevin Patra of NFL.com, DeVonta Smith is poised to make his first Pro Bowl appearance in 2024. With a new offensive scheme and an impressive showing in training camp, Smith is primed for a breakout season.
“Though Smith has often been overshadowed by A.J. Brown, his talents could shine in new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore’s scheme. Reports from Philly suggest that the fourth-year pro was having his best camp yet. Smith could find himself in his first Pro Bowl if that continues into the season.”
With the season fast approaching, the Eagles are ready to face the challenges ahead and prove their worth on the field. Stay tuned for more updates as the journey unfolds!
